So far this board is largely me talking to myself, but hey--I am large and contain multitudes. Here's today's thought / question:
I tried something new entering midterm grades this week. Since my classes have stringent attendance and tardiness policies, many students get a shock at the end of the term when their grade is lower (often much lower) than what had appeared in the Blackboard "My Grades." This time, I looked at how many classes had been missed and basically calculated whether continuing to miss classes / show up late at that rate would result in a lowered grade. If so, then I went ahead and lowered it on the midterm grade.
Has anyone done this? It may give some students a chance to see where things are headed in time to turn behavior around. Or it just may get me a bunch of phone calls from coaches and advisors. I'm curious to know how it's gone for others.

Hi Rebecca, I am trying something new this year. I have put a column for attendance in Canvas (Blackboard replacement). Each student has the full point value at the beginning of the semester and then I take off points as they miss class. (In my class the first few absences have fewer points attached to them, because I give them 3 absences that don't significantly affect the grade. Take care, Nancy
